Customer Reviews of 4 Track Adventures of Venice Shoreline Chris
Something that you hear and have to have. Ska unplugged? No, that would be a put down to this CD. It is a stripped down acoustic album with a SKA feel, lots of soul, and conviction. I think that is a better summary of it. The album has no studio trickery. In fact there is little more than an acoustic guitar, vocals, snare drum, a bass, and occasional keyboard. These sound like the makings of a dull listen, not true. The songs have a fast, fun, easygoing pace to them and the lyrics have a sarcastic tinge. Ex-Darling ranks as one of my favorite songs. I also like the hokey keyboard in "All-night Dinah". All in all, this is a great find and a fun listen. I am glad to see that Amazon offers it.
Old School done right
Excellent, excellent ska album - his sincere love, appreciation and understanding of ska music comes through loud and clear, and is contagious! If you liked ska at all before the third wave, this is a must have.
Excellent disk, but you have to see him live!!!
The first time I saw Venice Shoreline Chris was in Vancouver a few years back where he opened a show for The Planet Smashers (another great band). Since then I have seen him in Montreal a few times and his sets never cease to touch me. His sweet romantic numbers with just acoustic guitar are simply magical. His covers of great SKA tunes from the past are also always a lot of fun. The actual album also includes some organ tracks I'm not so fond of but the strength of the other tracks more than compensates. I eagerly await some new material, hopefully accompanied by covers of old SKA standards... the way he does 'em live.
