Customer Reviews of 39 Steps (1935)
A GREAT Hithcock, one of my favorites! Robert Donat goes to a show to watch some things but when one show comes on the crowd gets wild and a brawl begins. A gun is fired and Donat runs away with a lady he found who asked if she could stay for a little. He soon finds out she fired the shot and she's a secret agent looking for a man with half a pinky.
Soon she's found dead, stabbed, and Donat needs to run for the police would suspect him. Then the chase begins. He needs to find help and find this man with half a pinky. The ending is very exciting and it ends where the movie began, at the show! Enjoy this great Hitchcock!
One of Hitch's Best
This is one of Hitchcock's earlier movies. It features a sterling, and humorous turn by Robert Donat as a man mistaken for a spy. He must run from the authorities and from an enemy spy ring in order to buy himself time to prove his innocence. Along the way, he runs into Madeline Carroll, who at first unwillngly, and then willingly, becomes involved in his search for the truth. This is a "light" Hitch film--none of the brooding of later works such as Vertigo, but I find that I prefer that. There is a nice, happy ending where the bad guys lose and the hero gets the girl. Futhermore, there is a nice chemistry between the leads, which is especially evident in their smart, crackling dialogue. This particular edition has a rather superfluous intro, but I bought it as part of a box set with The Lady Vanishes and the first The Man Who Knew Too Much--a good deal. Also recommended: Vertigo, The Lady Vanishes, Rebecca, and Spellbound--Hitchcock forever!!!!
Solid Hitchcock
This is a solid direction done by Hitchcock. The story of an everyman caught in bad situation. Sound familiar? As it should for fans of Hitchcock. An earlier work for Alfred, you can see him still finding his style. If you enjoyed this, I would recommend "The Wrong Man" as well.
