Customer Reviews of 3121
That's It ! More than one time I said to myself: That's it, Prince! I've had enough of your songs! But then again, I've paid the price just to see if I could discover another of his "pearls". And that's the case with "The Dance", the only one where apparently he's followed his instincts. As for the rest... Well, another composer trying to please the majority with his "easy hits".
Off the hook!
I dig this CD sooo much! I hear vibrations of James Brown, Jimi Hendrex, Brother's Johnson all the while Prince is beign his wild-child funky self. My four favorites are Incense and Candles, Love, The Word, and Beautiful, Loved & Blessed. I am wearing the CD out! It's funky, fun, has bounce but also reveals a more mature, spiritual Prince.
Prince delivers another solid album!
I have been a major Prince fan since 1982 and it has sometmes been a bumpy ride( see "Come" or "New Power Soul", or better still, don't). But let's face it, in a career that has spanned 28 years now, this cat has been remarkably consistent and I'm happy to say that this album continues the positive momentum that started two years ago with the Musicology album and tour ( highest grossing tour of '04). "3121" opens with the funky title track with Prince using his old "Shockadelica" voice to sing harmony with his normal voice on the chorus. As on many Prince albums, this one opens with an invitation to a mind blowing party(like "1999" or "Jam of the Year"). You are invited to drink champagne from glasses with chocolate handles, the only catch is you can never leave. Next up is "Lolita", complete with 80's style synth runs that remind one of Princes old band, The Revolution. "Te Amo Corazon" is a sweet mellow groove that could probably be a hit for Enrique Iglesias or Marc Anthony. "Black Sweat" is probably my favorite here. A tightly controlled groove that keeps threatening to lose control but is held like a pit bull straining on it's leash. The push-pull tension makes for musical perfection. "Love" has some nice funky keyboard work apparantly from the man himself.( As usual, he does play the majority of the instruments.) "Fury" is another highlight. The title refers to hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and again has some really nice 80's/early 90's synth-like keyboards and some hot guitar runs. The grand finale is "Get On The Boat" with Sheila E. on percussion and Maceo Parker on sax. Prince throws in a few James Brown style "Good God" asides and calls Maceo's name right before his sax break in homage to the great one. Way funky and a perfect ending to a really satisfying album. By the way, this was Prince's first number one album since Batman seventeen years ago in 1989.
