Customer Reviews of 2Wire HomePortal 1000 Residential Gateway
Update it for best performance I have used this Homeportal (2wire Homeportal 100 also called a gateway) in more than one location for over 6 years. Once set up I have no complaints. <

>I used it for HPNA (networks set up through the phone line instead of wireless or bulky wired networking.) Though it works just as well with other types of wired networking..or wireless if you install adapters. <
> <
>After 4 years I had not upgraded the Homeportal and experienced some strange problems with very select online services (Yahoo Launch for example.) Upgrading the Homeportal's software resolved this. <

>I just purchased another one for a new location. Once set up, I experienced some troubles. I disconnected it and went right to the 2Wire support site. The next day the answer from the support people resolved my trouble. I had very out of date Homeportal software on the Homeportal. <

>Be sure to upgrade the homeportal from within the homeportal's homepage (links below). If you cannot upgrade from the homepage, your version is too old to upgrade this way. <
> <
>My recommendation is that you contact 2wire customer support (this is an EXCELLENT customer support team) via their website and let them know what hardware version you have and ask where to get the upgrades. <
> <
>Here is how to do this: www.2wire.com. Select "Support", Select "Find Answers", click on the first topic on the list (any topic will do), this will give you a new tab labeled "Ask a question." click on this and fill out the information as mentioned below and let them know you need to upgrade. <
> <
>They will then direct you to where to download upgrades and provide step by step installation instructions. <
> <
>You need to send them your homeportal information which looks like this: <
>Model number: HomePortal 100 <
>Hardware version: 2700-000200-xxx <
>Software version: 2.2.3.0 <
>Serial number: 2910000xxxxx <
>Provisioning key code: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx <
> <
>Once installed you can upgrade or find info on your homeportal at it's internal homepage by looking here: <
>http://gateway.2wire.net/index.html <
>or <
>http://homeportal.homeportal.2wire.net/ <
>or <
>http://172.16.0.1/ <
> <
>They will also want to know what computer system you are using, for example: <
>Windows XP <

>This homeportal is great for sharing resources over a network including printers and DSL connection. After 6 years of using it, I am very happy with it and with 2Wire as a company. <

Haven't had any problems
I received the home portal from SBC as part of their home networking kit. It was easy to install and I haven't had any problems with it. The software that came with it lets me monitor all the computers in the network, reset encryption keys, and change firewall settings. A couple of days later, I tried to help some friends with their Linksys router and it was such a pain, making me relieved that I spent the extra money for the wireless router.
Wired up
I think it's great except it's too big and bulky.
