Customer Reviews of 1987 World Series - Minnesota Twins vs St Louis Cardinals
Home teams win all 7 World Series games for the first time When the Diamondbacks beat the Yankees in the 2001 World Series that was the third time in the last fourteen years that we have seen a fall classic in which the home team won all seven games. Both of the other times the World Champions were the Minnesota Twins, who first turned this unique trick in the 1987 Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. On paper it did not look like an even matchup: the Cardinals had won the tough NL East with 95 wins while the Twins went 85-77 to take the AL Central crown. It was not surprising the Cardinals would win games 3-4-5 in St. Louis because the Twinkies were 29-52 on the Road in 1987. But the Cardinals clean-up hitter Jack Clark was out with an ankle injury and the Twins had the best home record in baseball (56-25) along with tremendous home field advantage of the Metrodome and its unbelievable noise level when the locals got rocking and rolling with their Homer Hankies. The Twins were able to maintain their momentum for six innings in Game 3 in St. Louis, but when starting pitcher Les Straker left with a 1-0 lead, the Twins bullpen quickly blew the lead and the game. In Game 6 in Minneapolis, with the Cardinals poised to win the series, John Tudor could not hold onto a 5-2 lead. The deciding Game 7 was not the absolute classic the Twins and Braves would manage four years later, but still had more than its fair share of thrills, including Vince Coleman gunning down too runners at the plate from left field. Left-hander Frank Viola and future Hall of Famer centerfielder Kirby Puckett were the standouts for the Twins, who, as of this writing, are still a current franchise in Major League Baseball. But we will not be surprised if a year or so down the road these World Series tapes are the only way we will be able to watch the Twins play.
