Customer Reviews of 1932-34
Hella fun. Smooth jive vocals, midway between the chaotic hilarity of Slim Gaillard and the swank harmonies of the Mills Brothers. Along with all the hepcat stuff, the Spirits also sang plenty of cornball material, although they always did it with a wink and nod. On several tracks they back Ella Logan, one of the superior blues singers of her time, and those tunes are particularly nice. This Dutch import has since been mirrored by a release on the Classics label... That one probably has even better sound quality, but any way you're able to track this music down, you'll be ever so happy. Fun stuff.
Spirits of Rhythm 1932-1934
This CD has some of the "jazziest" jazz one could imagine. With a couple of tiples, a paper wrapped suitcase for drums (complete with whisk brooms), some wonderful guitar work from the legendary Teddy Bunn and great "scat" singing from Leo Watson, many of these tracks should be considered classics.
The first track "Underneath The Harlem Moon," is five stars plus with Watson at his scat singing best and a surprise change of tempo near the end that would bring an audience at the Apollo to its feet.
"How Deep Is The Ocean" has some great vocal, too, from Watson and banjo struttin' Wilbur Daniels. Great "back and forth" stuff!
"Nobody's Sweetheart", "I Got Rhythm" and "I've Got The World On A String" also rate very highly.
And speaking of "rhythm," the song of that very name is included here...and it's just great!
The classic "My Old Man" is very harmonic with some superior guitar work from Bunn and some excellent tiple work from the Daniels brothers.
"That's What I Hate About Love" is also a "5 star special" with some wonderful back and forth bantering between the Daniels boys.
Red McKenzie and Ella Logan also have stints in this selection of tunes...but it's Watson, Bunn, Daniels and Daniels, Virgil Scroggins and Wilson Myers that make this the worthy addition to any jazz collection. JB.
