Customer Reviews of 17th Century German Harpsichord Music: The Stylus Phantasticus
Stylus Phantasticus indeed! This disc traces the evolution of the wild, improvisatory toccata as it was known and relished in Germany in the century before Bach. The music is very wild and uninhibited, filled with bravura passage work and unusual harmonies. Compounding this is the menatone tuning universally used in that time, which puts a minefield of dissonances in the composer's path. The harpsichord used, by Keith Hill, is tuned not only in meantone, but with a technique called "fringing" in which the unison strings are deliberately and consistently tuned slightly out of unison with one another, giving a restless feel to the sound, and added piquance to the dissonances. Parmentier is at his very best here. A five-star performance, all around!
