Customer Reviews of "A Celebration of Differences"
Another Triumph for Bobbi Zabel I have followed the career of Co-Director Bobbi Zabel from her award-winning first writings in 1967. This effort is no surprize to those who have known her passion for accuracy, detail and compassion in her projects. Her use of well known celebrities to help children and parents understand that their problems are shared by others is a stroke of genius not repeated elsewhere.
The topic needed this insightful presentation, and all who view it will gain from it.
Celebrating "A Celebration of Differences"
Viewing "A Celebration of Differences" was an extremely moving experience. Many people tend to place "unflattering" labels on those among us - especially children - with learning disabilities rather than explore these wonderful human beings who are coping with unimaginable challenges. I strongly recommend "Celebrations" to anyone who wants to understand these children, their special challenges, how they cope and succeed.
The opening of the tape was a little rough when the background narration featured adults talking at children in stereotypical negative words that kids with learning disabilities hear when growing up. It was made more difficult as the names of various learning disabilities flashed on the screen. While jarring to see and hear, it was an altogether appropriate lead-in for a story that was overall very uplifting and inspirational.
In their own words, youngsters and young adults talk about what it is like to be different - as the tape says, to be viewed by others as "square pegs in round holes or misfits." They speak eloquently of looking like everyone else on the outside but being very different on the inside in ways that others cannot comprehend.
As I saw the words "strength," "bravery" and "courage" used early in the tape to describe these children, I felt their use a little hyperbolic. By the end of the tape I felt these words were inadequate to provide the real measure of these special people. A young man working on his doctorate degree talks with poignancy about being afraid of picking up a book to read for fear it may be the book that "he can't read and others will find out he can't make it." Though an obvious success he is plagued by this fear. His is but one of many compelling stories on this tape.
As Bill Kurtis' narration observed, these youngsters are "born with a world of potential waiting to be tapped." How true!
